Colour HeadsAt present, the Institute recognises two levels of professional accreditation:

1. Associate Member (AMInstKT)
2. Member (MInstKT)

Other classes of membership will be established in due course (such as  “Fellow”  for highly experienced individuals,  “Student” for those in undergraduate education and “Affiliate” for individuals and organisations interested in the topic, but who would not qualify for accredited membership).

Who Should Join?

Membership of the Institute is for anyone whose work involves generating knowledge, transfering knowledge or applying knowledge in the development of products and services. Knowledge transfer professionals may be involved in a wide range of activities, including for example:

IKT 2007/08 membership rates are as follows: Members: £100.00* and Associates: £75.00*

*A 25% discount on the first year’s membership fee will be available to the first 500 members.  The discounted fees are Member: £75.00; Associate: £56.00;

Retired members pay the Associate Membership fee.

HMRC have agreed that IKT Membership Fees can be offset against income tax.  For details of how to claim, please see Frequently Asked Questions below.

Member FAQs

What is the Membership and Professional Standards Committee?

The Membership and Professional Standards Committee is appointed by the IKT Board and is responsible for: drawing up the rules and any amendments for accreditation of prospective members of the Institute and presenting them to the Board for approval; drawing up the Institute’s Code of Professional Conduct and presenting it to the Board for approval; keeping the Code under review; and reviewing all applications for membership of the Institute.  The Committee comprises between four and eight members or fellows of the Institute, drawn from a representative range of backgrounds and experience.
How will I know which level of membership to apply for?

Will you contact the individuals provided as referees?

If we feel that it is necessary to gain a further understanding of your experience record we will contact one or more of the referees.  You should therefore ensure that the individuals that you have nominated are aware that you have submitted an application for membership.
The declaration on the application requires me to confirm that I will abide by the Institute’s rules and code of conduct, what are these?

How long will it be before I know whether my application has been successful?

We aim to communicate with members as to the outcome of their application within six weeks of receipt.
How do I pay? Once your application has been successful, you will receive an email with instructions for accessing our secure payment process.
What happens if my application is unsuccessful?

You will be notified by email outlining the reasons why your application has not been accepted.
Is there a membership year?

We work on a rolling year basis with your renewal due on the anniversary of the date that you were notified of your acceptance to membership. 
Claiming for Income Tax relief for membership fees

HMRC maintains a list (List 3) which provides details of professional bodies approved by the Board of HMRC under S344 of the Income Tax (Earnings & Pensions) Act 2003. 

An annual subscription to a body shown in the list as approved by the Board is allowable where:

  • employees pay this out of their emoluments
    and
  • the activities of the body are directly relevant to the employment.

The activities of a body are directly relevant to an employment where the performance of the duties of that employment:

  • is directly affected by the knowledge concerned
    or
  • involves the exercise of the profession concerned.

The Institute of Knowledge Transfer has recieved approval under S344 and the Institute's name will apperar in the list of approved bodies when it is next updated (later in 2007).  Inspectors of Taxes will not receive notification of the Institute's approved status until then.  Therefore, if members wish to obtain a deduction for their annual subscription before the list is updated, they should explain when contacting their local Tax Inspector that the Institute has only recently been approved and quote the reference SAPP/T1644/04/2007/JEM.
