CPD Tracker

As the world’s first individual member-based professional body for knowledge transfer professionals, the launch of the IKT is a response to an increasing desire amongst KT practitioners, across Europe and elsewhere, to be able to demonstrate their professionalism, and to have it recognised.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is simply a means of ensuring that members of a profession maintain their expertise by keeping up to date with recent developments. Beyond maintaining professional competence, CPD facilitates the development of further skills and capabilities and assists in maintaining integrity and credibility of the profession. Hence the IKT - like most professional bodies - will be adopting a formal CPD scheme and requirements.

Given the emphasis on experiential learning and practice as well as qualifications the IKT’s CPD scheme will acknowledge a mix of structured and unstructured CPD activities, with a strong emphasis on the unstructured.  This will give you, as the member, more control.

‘Learning as Practice’ is particularly suitable to the interactive nature of knowledge transfer and therefore CPD will be most effective when it reflects an integral part of you work activity - rather than an additional burden. For this reason IKT’s CPD scheme will concentrate on the activities that have made the most impact on you and your role.

To allow you to manage this more unstructured CPD information and – effectively to provide you the opportunity to build you own on-line CV - should you wish – we will be shortly releasing an online 'CPD Tracker'.  This will allow you to record your professional development activities in a manner relevant to your career. The tracker will provide a template for members to report on their CPD. You will expected to structure you own learning and to keep a record of your CPD.

The Institute however expects records to reflect a balanced mix of activities. These should include professional work-based activities, courses/seminars/conferences and self-directed informal learning. The IKT suggests that the most important aspect of CPD is the outcome not the precise amount of input. The Tracker will help you structure this.

None the less, there remains a need to relate CPD to the IKT's membership criteria and hence in reviewing and recording their CPD activity members are encouraged to refer to the third edition of the AURIL/Proton Continuing Professional Development Framework for Knowledge Transfer Practitioners”: AURIL/ProTon, Dec 2006.
