Key to unlocking potential innovation from within the public & private sector research base, and to turning knowledge into new and profitable products and services, is the development of an adequately trained community of knowledge-transfer professionals. Vital to the development of this community is the ability to self-learn and interact, with other practitioners and with the ultimate users of knowledge - business and society.
As Open Innovation becomes the dominant innovation paradigm, the IKT believes that the effective use of information and communications technology will be critical to the KT community’s ability to interact with businesses and the science base. In particular, intuitive Web 2.0 tools and 'community of practice' methodologies, present the opportunity for more advanced and open networking opportunities between IKT members and with the broader innovation and knowledge transfer community. We will provide tools such as dynamic profiling, personal publishing, RSS, personal search tools, and content aggregation will enable knowledge workers to collect, capture, contribute and share knowledge in their own domain (when and where they want to).
Hence the IKT’s vision is to create the leading knowledge network portal which encourages innovation and speeds up knowledge exchange and transfer. The IKT is therefore undertaking a series of pilot studies to promote the value of creating virtual communities of practice in knowledge transfer. These pilots will provide collaborative, profiling and networking tools for practitioners and for those in the R&D base and in businesses interested in the more effective identification of potential collaborators and overcoming the geographical and sectoral barriers to the transfer of knowledge. We believe that the creation such a virtual community of KT practice across Europe could be vital to addressing the demands and complexity of Open Innovation.
